News:
Since I
covered the super event in Mobile
in the January Newsletter, I won’t mention it here except to say that
we had a
great time and it was good to be there with so many new guys.
But, on
another note, I would like to tell everyone (in case it was missed)
about the
event similar to it that will be here, in Atlanta,
this coming June: Castra
Romana-Atlanta, 14-17 June ’07.
One of the
first goals that Chris and I had was to sponsor a multi-legion event
here in Georgia,
similar to Castra-Romana in Charleston. With that in mind, I contacted the Army here
at Fort McPherson
about tying in a Roman event with the Annual Army Birthday Celebration
on Fort McPherson. Thanks to the great support by the Fort
McPherson Garrison Commander we will be allowed to emplace our
encampment on
the actual parade ground with all of the US Army participants as we
enhance the
Army Birthday celebration here in Atlanta
from 14-17 June ’07. I have started a
couple of websites to assist in getting out the word as well as
coordination.
This one: http://11thlegion.com/castra_romana-atlanta_2007/ is designed as an informational site, and
will be updated as plans are finalized.
This one: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/castra-atlanta/
is a Yahoo Groups site that we will used for coordination.
Lots of
info on the sites above, but I can tell you that we will be exposed to
all of
the other events and displays that the Army is bringing in for this
celebration
which means that we will have something there of interest to everyone.
Please plan
to attend and encourage everyone you know in the Roman World to do the
same.

‘Nuff said on this one. What a blast.
Workshops:
3 March ’07.
Hosted this one at my house, where Alex,
myself and new member Brian Lauthen worked on the frame for the
historical
scuta that we will soon be making. We
are not quite finished, but I think that we maybe need another hour of
work to
get it done – the luan face was not as easy to bend as I anticipated,
so I am
going to soak it really well before we try to mount it again. I think that Alex and I can finish it up this
weekend. Got the frame dimensions from
Matt Lukes based on the one he uses for the historical scuta he markets. Laudes
to Matt for sharing this design.
So, for anyone
interested, we will
soon be able to produce historical scuta that are constructed from
laminated
wood strips like the example from Dura Europos.
I can’t wait.
In addition to the
scutum frame,
Alex and I gave Brian some balteus
advice, so Brian should be ordering his balteus parts in the very near
future
and be able to get this complete in short order. So
far, he’s ordered his caligae from PAR
Fabrica and the linen for his tunica.
Great progress so far, Brian.
Upcoming Events:
15 March ’07: Discussion
of Roman military tactics and
equipment with the Pope High School Latin/Classics Club.
Pope High
School, 3001
Hembree Rd NE, Marietta, GA. 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
Need some support.
20 March ’07: Alex
and I will make a presentation to a
history class at Emory University,
8:00 AM to 9:30 AM.
22-25 March: Lafe. Lots of info on the
Yahoo! site and also on
the web. This will be a premier event
and I expect that we will all have a great time. Contact
me for more details if you need them.
Next Workshop:
7 April ’07. I am happy to host this again, but am equally
happy to move it elsewhere if someone wants to volunteer.
Regards,
Edge
